President Mnangagwa has called for an extensive investigation into the recent Redwing Mine accident, emphasizing the paramount importance of safety in all mining operations. Acting President Dr Constantino Chiwenga issued a statement following the successful rescue of 15 miners who had been trapped underground for four days.

Acting President Chiwenga expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders that led to the safe rescue of the miners. Despite the successful outcome, authorities remain committed to identifying lessons and implementing measures to enhance safety within the mining sector, regardless of ownership or the type of mining activity.

Speaking on behalf of President Mnangagwa, who is on a month-long annual break, Acting President Chiwenga commended the multi-agency teams from both the government and the private sector for their role in the successful rescue operation at the Metallon Gold-owned Redwing Mine in Penhalonga, Manicaland Province.

President Mnangagwa, who closely monitored the rescue efforts, has directed the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development to conduct a thorough investigation into the disaster. The aim is to extract valuable insights and adopt appropriate measures to elevate safety standards across the entire mining industry.

Acting President Chiwenga reiterated that the safety of mining workers and artisanal miners remains a top priority for the government. Ensuring that the mining sector’s remarkable growth is underpinned by the highest safety standards is a fundamental objective.

The rescue operation was hailed as a remarkable example of teamwork, swift response, and resource mobilization. It resulted in the successful extraction of all 15 trapped miners, a feat described as unparalleled globally. The hazardous and painstakingly slow rescue efforts were complicated by massive tremors that had caused the mine’s collapse.

Acting President Chiwenga acknowledged the dire situation and the incredible efforts that led to the miners’ safe return. He also mentioned that the rescued miners are currently receiving medical attention and counselling services.

Cutting-edge technology played a crucial role in locating and rescuing the trapped miners, underscoring the importance of modern methods in ensuring the safety of miners in challenging situations.
