Zimbabwe’s iconic football club Dynamos faces a double challenge – player discontent over unpaid sign-on fees and a lack of sponsorship, according to sources close to the team. This turmoil comes amidst a sluggish start to the 2024 season, with Dynamos yet to secure a win in three competitive matches.
Internal Divisions Caused by Unpaid Fees
An inside source revealed a growing rift within the team due to unequal treatment regarding sign-on fees. While some players have received their payments, others remain in the dark. This disparity has created a sense of unfairness and negatively impacted team morale.
“We have a situation where some players are considered more valuable and have been paid their sign-on fees, while others haven’t received anything at all,” the source stated
Dynamos’ financial woes appear to be worsening. The team lost its major sponsor, Sakunda Holdings, in December 2023, following a period of administrative instability within the club. Efforts to secure new partnerships with cooperatives have been unsuccessful, with these potential sponsors citing the same concerns raised by Sakunda.
On-Field Struggles Reflect Off-Field Issues
The off-field turmoil seems to be translating into on-field struggles. Dynamos has yet to register a victory in 2024, dropping their opening Castle Challenge Cup match against Ngezi Platinum Stars and suffering a league defeat to arch-rivals Highlanders. They managed a 2-2 draw against Hwange this past weekend, but the performance failed to mask the underlying problems.
Dynamos’ woes extend beyond finances. The team is currently using kits from the 2023 season due to their inability to secure a new kit supplier for 2024. As a temporary solution, the club plans to print player names and numbers on last year’s replica jerseys.
