KEY POINTS

  • Zimbabwean police have named suspects in the $4 million Ecobank heist.
  • South African Interpol has been engaged to track down the stolen funds.
  • Efforts to recover the money continue as investigations unfold.

In connection with the recent robbery of $4 million from Ecobank, Zimbabwean police have identified several suspects of the crime.

The huge robbery has drawn the attention of the general public and the police are increasing measures to retrieve the cash. Police believe the perpetrators have escaped to other countries, and the authorities have engaged South African Interpol to arrest them.

Some of the people who have been arrested have been named in the ZRP list of suspects which include Edward Maheya, Rebecca Marange and Shepard Mupeti.

These people were said to have participated in the theft in one way or another, whether by carrying physical objects or participating in the transportation of informal funds.

The heist involved the breaking into of a vault where the suspects got away with the large cash which was held in Ecobank’s branch in Harare.

Some of the investigations have shown that the suspects must have had an inside hand given the security that was in place at the bank.

International pursuit of the embezzled money

Since the criminals may flee across Zimbabwe’s borders, the police have sought assistance from the South African Interpol. This international cooperation is necessary because the authorities believe that the money has been transferred to other countries.

The use of Interpol increases the prospect of arrests of the group, although the faces the odds given the complex criminal network that may be concealing the individuals.

New Zimbabwe has reported that the authorities are not sparing any effort in the quest to recover the stolen money. Several leads still remain active, and the police are encouraging people with information on the case to come forward.

Current research and expectations of rebound

While the probes are ongoing, the Zimbabwean authorities still believe that the stolen money will be retrieved. The cooperation with the police of other countries is a good sign, and there is hope that the organizers will be punished.

The case of the Ecobank staff, which was robbed recently, is one of the many incidents of insecurity that haunts financial institutions in the bloc; however, the fast contact by the police and Interpol on this case should be a hope that it will not go unresolved.
