Two officers, Sergeant Chifamba and Constable Gunzva have been arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
This arrest was made on allegations of bribery through a viral social media video showing them taking bribes from pirate taxis and registered public service vehicles.
This happened at the Mabvuku turn off along the Harare Mutare Road. The date on which the video was recorded remains unknown.
Commissioner Paul Nyathi of ZRP National Spokesperson, confirmed the arrests, saying that both officers are now facing disciplinary and criminal charges. “They (a number of officers at the ZRP) are bad apples who do not deserve to be serving in Police Service,” Nyathi said.
Against corruption: zero tolerance
Nyathi said the ZRP Commissioner General has a zero tolerance for corruption within the force. He also said the authorities will ensure the law is enforced without fear or favour.
Furthermore, he affirmed the police’s resolve to integrity and accountability. In addition to saying that necessary steps are being taken to resolve the situation.
According to New Zimbabwe, The video, which has swiftly been shared online and attracted widespread condemnation, points to more general worries about police corruption.
