The Zimbabwean government has reiterated the importance of wetlands conservation as a fundamental part of achieving its Vision 2030 goals.

Officials say sustainable management of wetlands is essential for environmental stability, water security, and economic development.

The emphasis came during the 2025 National Wetlands Day celebrations in Hwange District.

The event also highlighted Victoria Falls’ new designation as a Wetland City under the Ramsar Convention, recognizing the country’s commitment to preserving wetlands.

Speaking at the event, Defense Minister Oppah Muchinguri Kashiri, representing President Emmerson Mnangagwa, underscored how protecting wetlands aligns with the country’s broader development goals.

“Through the involvement of the youths, we can foster a new generation of environmental stewards committed to preserving this critical ecosystem and creating the future we all want,” she said.

Zimbabwe is one of the 173 signatories to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, having ratified the treaty in 2014.

The government has pledged to meet its obligations by ensuring sustainable wetlands management and preserving their natural capacity.

Ramsar Convention praises Zimbabwe’s wetlands efforts

Zimbabwe’s commitment to wetland preservation was commended by the Ramsar Convention, particularly in Kasibo Wetland under Chief Hwange’s jurisdiction.

Dr. Musonda Mumba, Secretary-General of the Ramsar Convention, praised the country’s efforts in maintaining wetland integrity despite climate challenges.

“I am impressed with what I saw; it shows the country’s commitment to the preservation of wetlands. In most cases, during droughts like last year, wetlands dry up. But here, the wetland has remained intact. The world should see this success,” Mumba said.

According to ZBC News, the Minister of Environment, Climate, and Wildlife, Sithembiso Nyoni, also highlighted the vital role wetlands play in sustaining livelihoods.

“Wetlands are a source of livelihood, providing water for irrigation and other uses. They also support fishing and plant resources for communities.

However, since 1990, the world has lost 64 percent of its wetlands, and we must make a deliberate effort to preserve what remains while working to revive those that have dried up,” Nyoni said.

Chief Mtshane Khumalo, president of the Chief’s Council, emphasized the role of traditional leaders in wetland conservation.

“We are deeply committed to the preservation of wetlands. As custodians, it is our duty to teach our communities about their importance,” he said.

Zimbabwe to host Ramsar Convention in July 2025

In another significant development, Zimbabwe will host the 15th Ramsar Convention in Victoria Falls this July.

The event will unite international leaders to explore viable approaches for wetlands conservation.

The country demonstrates environmental sustainability dedication through its seven Ramsar-designated sites.

The forthcoming event enables Zimbabwe to present its knowledgeable wetland management methods and acquire conservation expertise from international professionals.

The government understood that respecting wetlands sustainably will be essential for preserving water resources, economic strength and meeting its 2030 Vision objectives.
