KEY POINTS
- ZBC’s Montrose Studios has completed four new radio studios and a TV studio upgrade.
- The digitization project aligns with Zimbabwe’s vision for economic growth by 2030.
- Additional investments are needed to complete the full modernization process.
The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) is making significant strides in digital transformation as part of the Second Republic’s broader initiative to modernize the country’s media landscape. A major upgrade has been completed at ZBC’s Montrose Studios in Bulawayo, marking a crucial step in the nation’s digitization agenda.
According to ZBC Board Chairperson Hellieta Rushwaya, the transition from analog to digital broadcasting is a game-changer for the national broadcaster.
“The capacitation of Montrose Studios is important in enabling us to create and produce relevant content. Four radio studios have been completed, with two of them funded by UNICEF through the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education for heritage-based broadcasting,” she said.
Also, this modernization aligns with Zimbabwe’s vision of becoming an upper-middle-income society by 2030.
Moreover, by upgrading technology and infrastructure, ZBC aims to enhance content quality and accessibility for Zimbabweans across various platforms.
New studios and digital infrastructure in place
Under the second phase of the Zim Digital Project, ZBC received an initial $500,000, a portion of the estimated $20 million budget required to complete the digitization process. The funding has already contributed to the completion of four radio studios and the refurbishment of a television studio.
The transformation of Montrose Studios includes the installation of modern equipment, transmitters, and broadcasting infrastructure, ensuring compliance with global standards set by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Moreover, additional developments are needed to complete the transformation.
According to ZBC News, more studios still require upgrades, and one television studio is awaiting further improvements before all facilities can be fully operational.
ZBC dedicates its modernization efforts to assets that exceed Montrose Studios. The organization dedicates funds to digital broadcasting development while it seeks to deliver premium content through three television channels and six radio stations nationwide.
Pushing forward the digital transformation agenda
As a national priority, the government recognizes the crucial role of modern media in economic and social development. With advanced technology, ZBC seeks to become an innovative digital leader for broadcasting in its region.
According to Rushwaya, the project reaches beyond studio upgrades because it directs Zimbabwean media toward its future development.
“These developments will allow us to produce content that resonates with our audience while maintaining high international standards,” she added.
All stakeholders predict that complete project execution will spawn fresh business potential for content development, educational opportunities, and national narratives. The technological enhancements at Montrose Studios represent a significant achievement that propels Zimbabwe into its complete digital broadcast system.
