Cuba has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening relations with Zimbabwe despite the economic sanctions imposed on both countries.

During a visit to Harare, Cuban National Assembly President Juan Esteban Lazo Hernández met with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House, emphasizing the need for stronger diplomatic and economic ties.

Speaking after their closed-door meeting, Hernández praised Zimbabwe for standing with Cuba in its fight against Western-imposed sanctions.

“For 63 years, Cuba has been under an economic blockade, but we have never surrendered, nor will we ever surrender,” he said. “With the unwavering support of Zimbabwe and our African brothers and sisters, we continue to move forward.”

According to ZBC News, Hernández highlighted the historical friendship between Cuba and Zimbabwe, noting that both nations have suffered under sanctions that have hindered their economic growth.

Additionally, he requested an extended partnership between the nations with improved economic connections that should match their existing diplomatic bonds.

A long-standing partnership rooted in history

Cuba and Zimbabwe have enjoyed 45 years of diplomatic relations, with ties dating back to Zimbabwe’s struggle for independence. The late Cuban leader Fidel Castro and Zimbabwe’s founding father, Robert Mugabe, played a significant role in fostering a bond between the two nations.

Hernández praised the existing cooperation, particularly in education, where thousands of Zimbabwean students have graduated from Cuban institutions.

“Over 3,000 Zimbabwean sons and daughters have studied in Cuba, a true testament to our enduring friendship,” he said.

He also acknowledged Cuba’s contributions to Zimbabwe through various medical and educational missions, which have strengthened the relationship between the two countries. Cuba has historically sent professionals to support Zimbabwe in areas such as healthcare, education, and scientific research.

Joint resilience against economic sanctions

Both Zimbabwe and Cuba continue to face economic sanctions that have slowed down their growth and development.

Hernández condemned the Western-imposed restrictions, stating that they have placed immense pressure on Cuba’s economy by limiting access to international financial institutions.

He extended his support to Zimbabwe as the country experiences economic difficulties because of U.S. and allied-imposed sanctions.

“We have discussed the impact of these sanctions and how they have impeded Zimbabwe’s development. However, we remain resilient, and through strong partnerships, we will continue to overcome these obstacles,” he added.

The governments of Cuba and Zimbabwe intend to deepen their trade activities, investments and economic collaboration to mark their 45th anniversary as diplomatic partners.

Both nations show dedication to progress through solidarity and mutual backing even when facing exterior obstacles.
