Zimbabwean and Eswatini Fashion Models Join Forces for a Unique Show

by Victor Adetimilehin

Zimbabwean fashion designers recently teamed up with models from the Kingdom of Eswatini for a one-of-a-kind event that showcased their creativity and cultural diversity. The Icansi Fashion Festival, held at the Zimbabwe Music Academy in Bulawayo, featured a mix of fashion and cuisine exhibitions.

Zimbabwe was represented by Noliwi “Noli B” Mhlophe and Penelope Mlauzi of Penelope Creations, who collaborated with three models from Eswatini’s Top Models Agency. Noli B, who co-organised the event, said she aimed to reach out across borders for growth and to promote African fashion on the global stage.

The event also attracted support from the Bulawayo City Council, which praised the designers and models for their talent and production. Nesisa Mpofu, the council’s publicist, urged them to continue to excel in their craft and to seek international recognition. She said Bulawayo should be mentioned alongside fashion capitals like London, Paris, New York and Milan.

The fashion industry in Africa is growing rapidly, with many designers participating in international shows and attracting attention for their unique designs and fabrics. According to Euromonitor International, the combined apparel and footwear market in sub-Saharan Africa is estimated to be worth US$ 31 billion. However, the industry also faces challenges such as lack of infrastructure, funding and exposure.

The Icansi Fashion Festival was an example of how African designers and models are overcoming these obstacles and creating opportunities for themselves and others. The event also celebrated the cultural diversity and heritage of the continent, which is reflected in its fashion. The organisers said they hoped to make the festival an annual affair and to include more participants from other African countries.
