Miss Universe Zimbabwe’s First Princess Defies Imitation, Inspires a Movement

by Victor Adetimilehin

In a world where imitation often blurs the lines of individuality, Miss Universe Zimbabwe’s first princess, Nokutenda Shekinah Marumbwa, stands as a beacon of authenticity and empowerment.

Marumbwa’s journey, much like her idol, the renowned South African model Zozibini “Zozi” Tunzi, is a testament to the resilience of young women aspiring to make their mark on the world stage. However, as she takes her place in the spotlight, Marumbwa firmly asserts that her path is uniquely her own.

While some critics have drawn parallels between Marumbwa and Zozi, from their hairstyles to their responses to questions, the 20-year-old model insists that any resemblance is purely coincidental. Her cropped hairstyle, which garnered attention, was inspired not by a desire to emulate Zozi but by the timeless elegance of her own mother.

Marumbwa’s connection with Zozi goes beyond appearances; she deeply admires the South African beauty queen for her journey from a small village to the Miss Universe throne. Zozi’s unwavering confidence, commitment to natural beauty, intelligence, and advocacy for self-love have left an indelible mark on Marumbwa’s heart.

Becoming the first princess at the Miss Universe Zimbabwe pageant was a transformative experience for Marumbwa. It reinforced the importance of family support and teamwork in achieving one’s dreams. Her parents played an instrumental role in her success, offering unwavering support despite their own challenges.

Marumbwa’s journey hasn’t been without its share of adversity. As a young girl, she faced bullying and body shaming due to her appearance. However, her mother’s words, “kumodelling kunodiwa vanhu vakaonda” (modelling is for the slenders), served as a turning point. She embraced her uniqueness and developed a passion for speaking out against body shaming.

Now, Marumbwa’s goal is to empower and inspire others facing similar challenges. She believes that one’s inner strength and self-belief can overcome societal expectations and judgments. Her platform, built on body positivity and a positive mindset, seeks to break down barriers and elevate individuals based on their inner worth.

Modelling has become Marumbwa’s escape route from life’s challenges. It’s the perfect platform for her to advocate for causes close to her heart, despite not coming from a privileged background. Her parents’ support fuels her determination to make them proud and continue her inspiring journey.

Titles have come Marumbwa’s way, from Miss University of Zambia’s First Runner-Up in 2022 to Queen of Zambia and, most recently, Miss Universe Zimbabwe’s First Princess in 2023. Each title represents a stepping stone in her mission to empower women and spread the message that true beauty lies within.

Nokutenda Shekinah Marumbwa shines as a symbol of individuality, empowerment, and resilience. Her story serves as a reminder that, with unwavering self-belief and support from loved ones, one can overcome any obstacle and inspire positive change.
