The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern warning to parents and guardians about the dangers of allowing minors to consume alcohol during the holiday season.

The festive period, marked by Unity Day, Christmas, and New Year celebrations, often sees an increase in underage drinking and related incidents, sometimes with tragic outcomes.

Outgoing Police Commissioner-General Godwin Tandabantu Matanga emphasized the importance of vigilance among parents.

“May I take this opportunity to strongly warn parents and guardians who allow minors under the guise of merry-making to partake in beer-drinking orgies,” Matanga said.

According to New Zimbabwe, he also called out operators of illegal liquor outlets, noting that some establishments serve alcohol to minors, exposing them to harm.

The police chief assured the public that such violations will not go unchecked.

“Arrests will be effected, and the law will certainly take its course,” he added.

Crackdown on smuggling and road violations

As the festive season peaks, ZRP is ramping up efforts to combat smuggling and maintain road safety.

Matanga announced 24-hour roadblocks and increased patrols to curb illegal activities, including the smuggling of goods like gadgets, second-hand clothes, cars, and food items.

He urged importers and exporters to adhere to regulations, stressing that non-compliance would result in strict legal action.

“Police officers will take action against anyone found engaging in the smuggling of goods into and out of the country,” he said.

Additionally, road safety campaigns will target unroadworthy vehicles, with ZRP officers impounding defective cars and barring pirate taxis from operating.

“Drivers are advised to avoid overloading and speeding. Public service vehicles are also encouraged to minimize night travel to prevent accidents,” Matanga warned.

Ensuring peace and safety during celebrations

Matanga reminded citizens to prioritize peace and safety while celebrating.

Families and businesses were advised against carrying large sums of money to prevent robberies.

He also urged caution with fireworks and other potentially disruptive activities, emphasizing the need for police notification before their use.

The ZRP has deployed additional personnel to maintain order across Central Business Districts, residential areas, and leisure facilities.

These measures include traffic blitzes, stop-and-search operations, and motorized patrols.

As part of the rainy season precautions, Matanga also warned motorists about crossing flooded rivers and navigating slippery roads.

In closing, the police chief reassured citizens that any reported corruption within the force would be dealt with decisively.

“As the public embarks on various activities, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is committed to ensuring that peace and safety prevail throughout the festive season,” he said.
