As the Chibuku Super Cup final approaches, Dynamos coach, Genesis Mangombe, anticipates a heated battle against league leaders, Ngezi Platinum Stars, on December 3 at Baobab Stadium. This clash is about more than just a trophy; it’s a gateway to the Caf Confederations Cup next year.
Dynamos, also known as DeMbare, secured their spot in the final by defeating Caps United 2-0. According to a report by Newsday Zimbabwe, key players Issa Sadiki and Elton Chikona made the victory possible with their stellar performances at the National Sports Stadium.
However, the stakes are high for both teams. If Ngezi Platinum, currently leading the league, wins the title, Dynamos could still secure a position in the Caf Confederations Cup, even if they don’t clinch the Chibuku Super Cup. Meanwhile, the Glamour Boys, who are eight points behind with a game in hand, are eyeing the top league position and the subsequent Champions League entry.
“We are playing the final at Baobab, so it’s not going to be an easy game,” commented Mangombe. “We beat them here so that they will be out for revenge. We expect the final to be tough.”
With a potential league and cup double on the horizon, Mangombe remains grounded. The team immediately focuses on battling the fourth-placed Manica Diamonds at Gibbo Stadium. “If we win that, it would be good for us, and we will see how it goes until the end of the season,” he added.
A victory in either the league or the Chibuku Super Cup would mark the end of Dynamos’ nine-year trophy-dry spell. For Mangombe, this return to prominence has been a journey since his ascent to leadership.
“Playing in Africa is a different ball altogether. We need aggression and other systems functioning well,” Mangombe stated.
