by Victor Adetimilehin

A Zimbabwean government official has issued a stark warning about the dangers of drug and substance abuse, particularly in the town of Norton. Marian Chombo, Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution, called for immediate action to combat the issue, expressing fears of a “lost generation” if left unchecked.

Minister Highlights Devastating Impact on Youths

Chombo’s remarks came during a visit to Norton Hospital on June 17, 2024, where she participated in a donation ceremony. While there, she spoke candidly about the alarming rise of drug abuse in the town, specifically mentioning the Katanga area as a major hotspot.

Her visit to the Fight Against Substances and Addictions (FASSA) Rehabilitation Centre further underscored the severity of the problem. Chombo encountered individuals from various backgrounds, including educated professionals like doctors and engineers, battling addiction.

“This is a heart-rending situation,” Chombo said. “Everyone here has a relative who has been affected by this scourge.” She emphasized that drug abuse transcends socio-economic boundaries, impacting “the rich or poor, men and women, black or white.”

Appeal for Prayer, Community Support, and Accountability

The Minister implored citizens to unite in addressing the crisis. She emphasized the importance of prayer and urged the community to rally behind organizations like FASSA, which provide crucial support for those struggling with addiction.

Chombo acknowledged the financial constraints faced by rehabilitation centers and called for increased support to ensure they can meet the growing demand for services.

Furthermore, she stressed the importance of individual responsibility. “We need to learn to be generous,” Chombo stated. “But parents also need to be more involved in their children’s lives.”

The Minister highlighted the detrimental effects of drug abuse, citing rising crime rates and gender-based violence as concerning consequences.

Focus on Local Development and Collaboration

While addressing the drug crisis remained a central theme, Chombo also commended local efforts to improve Norton. She praised Councillor Tinashe Machemedze for his initiative in donating essential supplies like blankets and groceries to the community and Norton Hospital.

The Minister underscored the critical role local government plays in driving development. She challenged councilors to work collaboratively and hold themselves accountable to the public.

“Councillors, you have to be accountable,” Chombo asserted. “Norton has the potential to be a wonderful town. We want the council to be the best.”

Chombo’s visit to Norton sheds light on a growing problem plaguing Zimbabwean communities. The pervasive nature of drug abuse demands a multifaceted approach. Prayer, community support, increased resources for rehabilitation centers, parental involvement, and a commitment to local development are all crucial elements in tackling this complex issue.

The potential loss of a generation due to drug abuse serves as a stark reminder of the urgency required. Timely and collaborative action from government officials, community leaders, and citizens alike is essential to ensure a brighter future for Norton and Zimbabwe as a whole.
