Advocates Applaud Harsh Penalty for Severe Crimes.

A Harare regional magistrate has sentenced serial rapist and robber Crispen Bonda to 85 years in prison. Bonda, 36, was convicted of 11 counts of rape and robbery. The court withdrew other charges initially filed against him.

Magistrate Clever Tsikwa handed down the sentence, suspending 10 years on the condition of good behavior. Two years will run concurrently, resulting in an effective 75-year sentence at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison. Bonda had denied all charges, claiming mistaken identity.

Children’s rights lawyer Caleb Mtanwa praised the sentencing. “For years, we have called for lengthy and deterring sentences in rape and sexual abuse cases,” he said. “The law allows for life imprisonment for such crimes. We welcome the 73 years effective sentence.”

Human rights lawyer Opal Sibanda called the sentence a significant judicial response. “The severity of this offense cannot be overstated,” she said. “The repeated sexual abuse of minors, especially those as young as 13, inflicts profound and lasting trauma.”

Sibanda emphasized the need for stiffer penalties to deter such crimes. “Children are among the most vulnerable in society. It is our collective responsibility to ensure their protection and well-being,” she added. “Such sentences send a clear message that sexual abuse, particularly against minors, will not be tolerated.”

In his ruling, Magistrate Tsikwa noted that Bonda was apprehended by residents while asking for the address of one of his victims. He failed to explain his presence at the juvenile’s home. One victim identified Bonda through his clothing and facial features. Another victim identified him at a police lineup, recalling that he held a torch during the attack.

Bonda committed these crimes between December 2022 and late last year. He raped several juveniles, robbed some victims, and threatened them with a knife before fleeing.

Sibanda highlighted the need to strengthen legal frameworks and support systems to protect children. “The justice system’s recognition of the serious harm inflicted upon young survivors and its commitment to holding perpetrators accountable is crucial,” she said. “We must continue to prevent such atrocities in the future.”

The sentencing of Bonda underscores Zimbabwe’s judicial commitment to addressing severe sexual offenses. The harsh penalty reflects society’s stance against such crimes and aims to deter future perpetrators.

Crispen Bonda, a serial rapist and robber, received an 85-year sentence for his crimes in Zimbabwe. The court’s decision has been widely praised by children’s rights advocates and legal experts, emphasizing the need for stringent penalties to deter sexual abuse and protect vulnerable populations.
