Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has arrived in Moscow, Russia, to attend the third Russia-Africa Summit, where African leaders and Russian officials are expected to discuss trade, investment, energy and other areas of cooperation.
Mnangagwa arrived in the Russian capital on Monday and was received by Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Borisenko and Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Amon Murwira.
The summit is expected to provide an opportunity for Russia and African countries to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations while exploring partnerships aimed at supporting development across the continent.
Trade and investment top summit agenda
Trade and investment are among the key issues expected to feature prominently during the summit. Discussions will focus on expanding commercial ties, attracting investment and identifying opportunities for cooperation between Russia and African economies.
African countries are seeking to diversify their international partnerships as they pursue industrialisation, economic growth and improved access to capital, technology and markets.
The summit is also expected to address food security, artificial intelligence, digital transformation and energy cooperation, including nuclear energy.
These areas reflect the range of sectors in which Russia and African governments are seeking to develop partnerships. However, the extent to which the discussions translate into new investments and concrete agreements will depend on the outcomes of individual engagements.
Mnangagwa represents COMESA
Mnangagwa is attending the summit in his capacity as chairperson of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
His role is expected to bring regional trade and economic integration into focus during his engagements with Russian officials and other African leaders.
COMESA promotes economic cooperation among its member states, including efforts to expand trade, improve regional market access and encourage investment.
Stronger commercial links between Russia and COMESA countries could create opportunities in areas such as agriculture, energy, technology and industrial development. Any benefits, however, will depend on the agreements reached and their implementation.
Expected talks with Putin
Mnangagwa is also expected to hold bilateral discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on issues of mutual interest.
The meeting could provide an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss Zimbabwe-Russia relations and identify areas where cooperation can be expanded.
Zimbabwe has been pursuing international partnerships to support its economic development, while Russia has sought to strengthen its engagement with African countries across strategic sectors.
The Zimbabwean president is also expected to meet members of the Zimbabwean community living in Russia during his visit.
Russia and Africa seek stronger economic ties
The third Russia-Africa Summit comes amid efforts by Moscow and African governments to deepen cooperation and increase trade and investment flows.
For African countries, engagement with Russia forms part of broader efforts to widen economic partnerships and access new sources of investment, expertise and technology.
The summit’s significance will ultimately depend on whether the discussions produce practical agreements, new investment commitments and projects that support economic development in participating countries.
