Zimbabwe’s Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) chair Fungayi Jessie Majome on Wednesday reaffirmed her agency’s commitment to deeper collaboration with the UN, in line with global momentum at the 80th UN General Assembly UNGA@80.
Majome’s courtesy call with the UN Country Team underlined the commission’s efforts to mainstream human rights and administrative justice into Zimbabwe’s development agenda at a moment when the world is spotlighting multilateral cooperation.
UNGA@80 sets global human rights tone
Furthermore this year’s theme “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights” places rights, justice, and collective responsibility at the heart of global diplomacy. Zimbabwe’s push for integration of rights into its National Development Strategy 2 (NDS 2) reflects the same multilateral priorities echoed at the assembly.
Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission UN partnership deepens
Majome noted that, with UN support, ZHRC has expanded outreach to communities across Zimbabwe, delivering awareness campaigns on rights and access to justice. She said that awareness is the first line of defense in making rights real for citizens.
Call for human rights in national planning
UN Resident Coordinator Edward Kallon urged that human rights not be an afterthought, but embedded in Zimbabwe’s NDS 2. He stressed that meaningful protection of women’s rights and vulnerable groups demands that rights guide national policy, not follow it.
Majome reiterated that the commission’s mandate goes beyond advocacy, she further described the specialised outreach work as building a culture of accountability within public administration. She also said with active citizen participation and solid partnerships, Zimbabwe can move from constitutional promise to daily practice.
