OK Zimbabwe, a prominent retailer in the country, has launched an imaginative initiative to inspire children to write stories about their real-life heroes and heroines during the Heroes’ Holidays school break. The “Heroes, Write and Win” competition, which ran from August 14 to September 8, received an overwhelming response with over 500 essays submitted by school-age children. Participants were tasked with writing about individuals they admire and look up to, sharing their narratives on the OK and OK Mart Facebook pages or dropping them off at any OK or OK Mart store nearby.
The stories were broadcasted live on the radio every week, and a winner was chosen. These deserving winners were rewarded with congratulatory hampers from OK Zimbabwe, a company committed to “making happiness tangible by bringing smiles to employees, customers, suppliers, shareholders, and the communities they serve.” The competition aimed to cultivate a culture of storytelling among children, offering them a powerful means of self-expression and emotional sharing. Additionally, it provided an avenue for them to celebrate their heroes and heroines who serve as inspiration and purpose in their lives.
This innovative initiative received warm appreciation from parents and guardians of the participating children, acknowledging OK Zimbabwe’s efforts to engage and empower the younger generation. The business has expressed its commitment to continue running similar initiatives in diverse ways, involving school-age children.
OK Zimbabwe has been actively involved in various community and customer-oriented endeavors. Recently, the company inaugurated a new Bon Marche-branded store at the Megawatt complex in Marondera, lauded as “the most beautiful store in Zimbabwe.” Furthermore, OK Zimbabwe is one of the sponsors of the annual OK Grand Challenge Jackpot Promotion, a program that rewards customers with cash and prizes for shopping at OK stores.
It is noteworthy that OK Zimbabwe is not the only business supporting children’s education and creativity in the country. In July, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe made a significant donation of 100,000 books to primary schools across the nation, a vital part of their commitment to promote literacy and learning. These books encompassed storybooks, textbooks, and dictionaries and were an integral component of Econet’s “Read to Succeed” campaign. This campaign aims to enhance reading skills and cultivate a love for reading among children. Econet also operates an online platform known as Ruzivo Digital Learning, offering interactive and curriculum-aligned digital learning resources for primary and secondary students.
These collective initiatives underscore the dedication of Zimbabwean businesses to invest in the nation’s future by nurturing the talents and potential of its children.
