In response to the escalating cholera crisis in Zimbabwe, which has reportedly claimed over 300 lives, Nelson Chamisa, the leader of the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC), has urgently called on the government to establish well-equipped treatment units in the epicentres of the outbreak. This plea comes as the nation faces its worst cholera epidemic since 2008, a calamity that resulted in approximately 4,000 deaths and was declared a “national emergency” by the government.
Chamisa’s call for action highlights the gravity of the situation, with suspected and confirmed cases reported across all 10 provinces and 41 out of the 62 districts of Zimbabwe. The situation is particularly dire in the southeastern provinces, including Masvingo, Harare, Manicaland, and Mashonaland West.
“I am deeply concerned over the cholera crisis unfolding in Zimbabwe. With over 16,000 infections and a death toll exceeding 300, urgent action is imperative,” Chamisa stated. He emphasized the necessity of establishing well-equipped cholera treatment centres, particularly in the worst-hit areas, to contain the spread and provide timely assistance.
According to a report by New Zimbabwe, Chamisa also commended the dedication of frontline workers, underscoring the need for immediate support and adequate resources to effectively treat cholera cases. He reiterated that clean water is not just a basic human right but a constitutional right under Section 77(a) of the Zimbabwe Constitution.
In addition to calling for a concentrated effort to supply safe drinking water, Chamisa stressed the importance of regular and comprehensive updates on the cholera situation and public health response. He believes that empowering citizens with information is crucial for taking necessary precautions and contributing to containment efforts.
The CCC leader also pointed out that the ongoing governance crisis in Zimbabwe hampers an effective response to the cholera outbreak. He called for immediate reforms to prevent further suffering in Zimbabwe and the broader region.
Chamisa appealed to international partners for continued support, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in tackling the crisis. “In this critical moment, let us stand united. Our collective well-being is at stake, and we have a responsibility to institute immediate and effective measures to address this humanitarian crisis,” he concluded.
