Bulawayo’s Third Sneakers Expo: A Footwear Extravaganza

by Victor Adetimilehin

Bulawayo, the vibrant city known for its love of streetwear culture, recently played host to the third edition of the Sneakers Expo. This year’s event, held at Mystique Gardens, witnessed a significant surge in attendees, attracting sneaker enthusiasts, traders, musicians, and even participants from as far as Harare. The expo, which kicked off in 2021, has rapidly evolved into a spectacle of style, self-expression, and sneaker adoration.

Organizer Davison “Diva” Feliate highlighted the universal appeal of sneakers, making this gathering a must-attend for everyone who loves their footwear fashion. While acknowledging limited sponsorship, the event managed to secure support from notable names like Value Gas, Chaipexx Trucking, Winning Designs, PES, Ecobank, Liquid, and Audio Serve, a testament to its growing popularity.

The Sneakers Expo is more than just a marketplace; it’s a platform for education and celebration. Attendees learned about sneaker culture, from maintenance tips to making informed purchase decisions. Customization was also a highlight, with participants personalizing their kicks to suit their unique style.

Comparing the third edition to its predecessors, the surge in attendance is evident. The first gathering saw approximately 100 attendees, while the second managed to attract 500. This year’s numbers showcased the event’s continued growth, solidifying its place in Bulawayo’s cultural calendar. Beyond the footwear fascination, the event offered a backdrop of food, music, and refreshments, enhancing the overall experience while staying true to its primary focus: sneakers.

Sponsors like Value Gas expressed their satisfaction with the event, not only in terms of brand exposure but also in connecting with customers and supporting a community-driven initiative. Brighten Tipi, representing Harare-based Shoe Guru, had a bustling day offering sneaker cleaning services. Tipi, who traveled from Harare to be part of the expo, appreciated the energy, the crowd, and the customers’ enthusiasm in supporting their work. One satisfied customer lauded Shoe Guru’s services, which turned their dirty sneakers into pristine fashion statements.

Bulawayo’s affection for streetwear culture and the value it places on self-expression through fashion was unmistakable at the expo. The event not only serves as a marketplace but also as a symbol of the city’s evolving fashion scene. The third edition of Bulawayo’s Sneakers Expo marked a milestone in its evolution, setting the stage for even more significant gatherings in the future. As this event continues to grow, it highlights the city’s unique fashion identity and brings together people who share a common love for stylish, comfortable, and trendsetting footwear.
