US Ambassador: Zimbabwe’s Economic Growth Hinges on Human Rights

Ambassador Calls for Reforms and Transparency in Zimbabwe

by Victor Adetimilehin

The newly appointed United States Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Pamela Tremont, has urged the Zimbabwean government to implement essential reforms and ensure transparency to foster economic growth. Addressing the media in Harare, Tremont emphasized that respect for the rule of law and constitutionalism is crucial for Zimbabwe’s development.

Importance of Democratic Principles

Tremont highlighted that broad-based economic prosperity is unattainable without robust democratic institutions, good public health, and regional security. She stressed that the United States supports these elements because they are critical for Zimbabweans to shape their future.

“The democratic principles we advocate for in Zimbabwe are grounded in the protection of rights enshrined in the Zimbabwean constitution. These are the same rights that Zimbabweans fought for during the liberation struggle,” said Tremont. She added, “We believe that Zimbabwe should uphold its constitution because that is what its people deserve.”

Despite nearly two decades of strained relations, Zimbabwe has been seeking to re-engage with the USA while maintaining its ties with the East. Earlier this year, the US government lifted specific sanctions on Zimbabwe but kept President Mnangagwa and his close associates under the Global Magnitsky program, citing human rights violations and corruption.

Tremont reaffirmed the USA’s commitment to resolving bilateral issues, stating, “Our sanctions transition in March was a historic event. We eliminated Zimbabwe-specific targeted sanctions and reduced the number of individuals on the Global Magnitsky list. This program holds people accountable for corruption and human rights abuses, preventing US financial institutions from being complicit.”

Moving Forward

The ambassador expressed her intention to improve relations with Zimbabwe. “On policy issues, I aim to enhance relations. That is the goal of every ambassador. I am exploring new ways to collaborate with the Zimbabwean government, civil society, and business community,” Tremont said.

The USA’s focus on human rights and good governance as prerequisites for economic growth underscores the importance of these values in fostering international relations and development. As Zimbabwe navigates its path forward, the emphasis on democratic principles and transparency will be crucial in securing sustainable economic progress.
