Mnangagwa Demands ZANU PF Adhere to Constitution, Ensure Party Discipline

Zimbabwean President Calls for Strict Adherence to Party Rules, Respect for Term Limits.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called for strict adherence to the ZANU PF constitution, emphasizing discipline and respect within the party. In his opening remarks at a politburo meeting held at the party’s headquarters, Mnangagwa made it clear that indiscipline has no place in ZANU PF.

“Adherence to principle, honesty, and integrity must remain the hallmark of party leaders and the membership in general,” Mnangagwa stated. He urged the party leadership to nurture a strong sense of respect for the party’s constitution.

Mnangagwa emphasized that all party organs must fulfil their duties in accordance with the party’s directives, rules, and regulations. He urged the commissariat department, supported by their respective wings, to take a more vigorous lead in establishing this culture.

Although Mnangagwa did not elaborate on what led to this strict reminder, recent weeks have seen ZANU PF youths calling for their leader to stay until 2030. This call is in contravention of the constitutionally mandated two-term limit.

Mnangagwa is currently serving his second and last term, according to the Constitution. Early this month, he dismissed speculation that he would seek a third term. At the commissioning of the Mutare Teachers College’s fruit juice and water processing plant, Mnangagwa reiterated his commitment to stepping down after his current term.

“I am serving my last term and after that, I will retire and rest,” he said, citing the party and national constitutions’ two-term limits.

Mnangagwa also emphasized the need for the party to adhere to the constitution when solving grievances. “Similarly, clarifications regarding party mobilization, restructuring, and co-options as well as disciplinary procedures must be clearly explained to our structures. In this regard, our constitution is the fundamental point of reference,” he said.

The president expressed frustration over the lack of a comprehensive database for party members. “The effective deployment of information communication technologies for a comprehensive, authentic, and verifiable party membership database is taking too long,” Mnangagwa said. He called for the identification of challenges and the establishment of technical partnerships to address this issue. “We have talked enough and now demand concrete results,” he added.

Mnangagwa’s call for discipline and adherence to the party constitution comes at a critical time for ZANU PF. With national elections on the horizon, the president’s message underscores the importance of unity and integrity within the party.

His emphasis on following the ZANU PF constitution and maintaining discipline within the party is a strong message. It reflects a commitment to upholding the principles of the party and ensuring a stable political environment. As the country moves forward, these values will be essential in guiding the party’s actions and decisions.
