Chiredzi came together this Saturday for a 10-kilometer marathon at Chishamiso Stadium, aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer.
The event drew more than 100 participants from the community, joining a global effort to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month and highlight the importance of early detection.
Encouraging screening and fitness
The marathon participants took the opportunity to encourage women to prioritize regular breast cancer screenings. One participant, who won the race, shared her enthusiasm: “I am happy to have won this marathon, but more importantly, I hope this inspires women to get screened for breast cancer because early detection saves lives.”
Another participant emphasized that the marathon was more than just a race, saying, “This is a win for the ladies, and it’s also a win for breast cancer screening. I encourage all women to get screened early and maintain fitness to reduce their risk of diseases like breast cancer.”
According to ZBC news, the event highlighted the relationship between fitness and overall health, with participants stressing the benefits of regular exercise in lowering the risk of chronic illnesses, including breast cancer.
Raising awareness through local initiatives
Mr. Sabadu Seva, who works closely with women in the fitness business, planned the event.
“We organized this 10k marathon to raise breast cancer awareness among women in Chiredzi,” he said, elaborating on the marathon’s purpose. Since many women are reluctant to get checked, we wanted to help and motivate them to do so.
The program was commended for providing locals with access to important health information, encouraging exercise and well-being, and giving them a chance to get involved in a worthwhile cause.
Winners and community impact
Memory Marumbini won the women’s race, and Taurai Dondowa took first place in the men’s 10-kilometer race. The community came together to support the cause of raising awareness of breast cancer, and both athletes were commended for their efforts.
In addition to raising awareness of the value of routine screenings, the marathon showed how effective community-based programs can be in advancing health and education.
Such local events give people a chance to learn, get engaged, and improve their own and other people’s lives because breast cancer is still a major global concern.
