Members of the ruling Zanu PF party, Councillor Knowledge Chipindu and Uzumba Member of Parliament Wiriranai Muchemwa, have been detained by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) on suspicion of fraud and theft of trust property.

Zanu PF stronghold Uzumba shaken by high-profile arrests

Zacc said in a statement on Tuesday that the two officers are accused of embezzling trust-held funds. The anti-corruption agency announced, “They are charged with either fraud or theft of trust property.”

Mashonaland East province’s Uzumba district has long been a Zanu PF stronghold, with the party controlling political representation there for many years.

According to newsday, the district is seen as a crucial constituency in preserving Zanu PF’s hold on power because its citizens vote for the party in national elections.

Simbaneuta Mudarikwa, a long-time incumbent who had served the seat for multiple terms under the Zanu PF banner, lost to Muchemwa in the 2023 elections for the position of Uzumba’s MP.

With his campaign pledges of improved representation and community development, Muchemwa’s win signalled a dramatic change in the party’s local leadership.

Representing the ruling party, Councillor Chipindu has been involved in local governance and is well-known for his strong connections to local leadership organizations.

His and Muchemwa’s arrests have sparked debate over Zanu PF’s internal management and how public assets are managed in its stronghold areas.

Anti-corruption drive intensifies with Zacc targeting top officials

The accusations against the two officers coincide with Zacc’s nationwide drive on corruption. The arrests show that even within the ranks of the ruling party, there are rising worries about public officials’ responsibility.

The investigation’s timing and the suspected crimes were not further explained. Regardless of their political affiliation, Zacc reaffirmed its commitment to making sure that public officials who commit corruption are held accountable.

In Uzumba and elsewhere, the case has generated a lot of conversation, and locals and political observers are keeping a careful eye on the situation.
