Zimbabwe is doubling down on its mission to end HIV and AIDS in children as part of its broader goal to eliminate the disease by 2030.

While improvement in adult treatment is now evident, there is still a high prevalence of treatment among children, many of whom do not receive adequate treatment.

The government is now aiming at this vulnerable group so that none of the children falls through the cracks.

Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, the Minister of Health and Child Care has noted that eliminating this disparity is one of the highlights for 2025.

“It is also important for us to work on treatment, diagnosing, and managing of children with this disease,” he said.

The road to 95-95-95 targets

Zimbabwe has made good progress in the 95-95-95 HIV/AIDS fast-track targets among the adults but children are poorly served in terms of diagnosis and treatment.

This gap erodes the general advancement of the nation as well as the sustainability of growth attained.

According to ZBC News, the government’s intensified focus includes expanding diagnostic tools, increasing access to pediatric antiretroviral treatments, and strengthening care programs tailored to the unique needs of children.

A renewed commitment to health equity

The government’s renewed commitment is well ahead of global emphasis as it seeks to fight HIV AIDS, while making the health sector accessible to everyone.

Some people have hope that 2025 is going to be the year of change in HIV/AIDS affecting children and placing the nation in a stronger position to promote health equity across Africa.

Stakeholders are optimistic that 2025 will mark a turning point in the fight against HIV/AIDS in children, further strengthening the nation’s position as a leader in health equity within African.
