The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested over 5,000 traffic offenders in Harare’s Central Business District as part of an ongoing operation to restore traffic order.

Launched nearly a month ago, the initiative targets errant motorists to curb lawlessness and enhance road safety.

ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests, stating, “We have arrested 5,138 traffic violators, some of whom have paid fines, while others will be taken to court.

Sanity must prevail in the city, and we will apply the law without fear or favor.”

Enforcing road safety laws

Commuters have expressed optimism about the operation’s impact on traffic order.

They believe the presence of law enforcement has encouraged motorists to adhere to road regulations.

“We notice that with the police around, motorists are more likely to follow the rules,” one commuter shared.

Another added, “The police should also tackle commuter omnibuses using undesignated points to drop off passengers.”

Last week, videos circulated on social media showing errant drivers engaged in confrontations with the police.

These incidents spurred authorities to intensify their efforts to maintain order in the city.

Thousands of arrests highlight traffic issues

The ZRP’s operation reflects a broader effort to address long-standing traffic challenges in Harare.

According to ZBC News, Commissioner Nyathi emphasized the need for consistent enforcement to ensure sustainable improvements.

So far, offenders have faced legal consequences, including fines and court appearances, as part of the city-wide crackdown. The operation is set to continue until a lasting sense of order is established.

Public reacts to restored order

Most of the residents of Harare support the move saying it has brought order on the roads by reducing on the number of accidents.

”The operation has brought some relief to the city,” A commuter had to say. However, some have demanded for more extensive processes in regard to issues like; illegal drop off centers and safety for pedestrian.

With law enforcement maintaining a visible presence, the operation shows the importance of accountability and adherence to traffic laws in ensuring a safe urban environment for all.
