KEY POINTS

  • Chiwenga’s allies accuse Mutsvangwa of being a foreign double agent.
  • A leaked audio recording exposes the growing Zanu PF factionalism, revealing deep divisions within the party.
  • Mutsvangwa faces backlash over comments dismissing Chiwenga’s leadership prospects.

Supporters of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga have come out strongly against Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa, accusing him of being a double agent working for hostile foreign nations.

The backlash comes after a leaked audio recording in which Mutsvangwa dismissed any chances of Chiwenga succeeding President Emmerson Mnangagwa, describing him as unelectable, cruel, and lacking leadership qualities.

The recording, published by UK-based investigative group Dug Up, has sparked a fresh wave of political infighting within the ruling party.

A group calling itself the General Chiwenga Voluntary Supporters Association (GCVSA) released a statement alleging that military intelligence had already identified Mutsvangwa as an operative working to weaken Zimbabwe from within.

“The GCVSA is aware of a recent military intelligence dossier linking Mutsvangwa to espionage activities involving hostile foreign powers,” the group’s Secretary General, Ntokozo Msipha, claimed in a statement.

Allegations of espionage and internal sabotage emerge

The GCVSA statement described Mutsvangwa as a political saboteur working to discredit Chiwenga as part of a larger scheme to control Zimbabwe’s leadership succession.

“This intelligence confirms what many have long suspected—Mutsvangwa is not merely a loudmouth but an active saboteur working to weaken Zimbabwe from within,” the statement read.

According to New Zimbabwe, the group also suggested that Mutsvangwa was being used by external forces to manipulate Zimbabwe’s leadership transition leading up to the 2030 political agenda.

“His masters have sent him on a mission: to undermine the military, to spread falsehoods about national heroes, and to confuse the people with propaganda so that the 2030 succession project can be smoothly implemented.”

While Mutsvangwa has not responded directly to the accusations, political analysts say his fallout with the Chiwenga faction highlights the deepening factionalism within Zanu PF.

Growing tensions in Zanu PF’s leadership struggle

Mutsvangwa, who played a key role in the 2017 coup that ousted former President Robert Mugabe, now appears as a threat to the Chiwenga camp.

The leaked tape recordings have generated debates about internal power competitions in Zanu PF that endorse Mnangagwa’s extended presidential term beyond 2028.

Chiwenga’s allies have not held back in their attacks on Mutsvangwa, branding him a “political scavenger” who has betrayed the revolutionary movement.

“The people of Zimbabwe are not blind. They see through your deception, Chris Mutsvangwa. You are not a kingmaker, you are not a revolutionary. You are a political scavenger, feeding on the scraps left behind by real leaders,” the GCVSA statement declared.

Zanu PF’s deepening succession conflict has induced political analysts to forecast additional political developments within the governing party.

For now, Chiwenga’s supporters are making it clear that they will not back down in their defense of the vice president’s political ambitions.
