President Emmerson Mnangagwa, as the Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), has called on member states to remain vigilant against emerging threats that could destabilize the region.
In his remarks marking Southern Africa Liberation Day, he emphasized the need to uphold the hard-won independence, sovereignty, and freedom of the region.
The day serves as an occasion to honor the sacrifices made by the heroes and heroines who fought for the liberation of Southern Africa.
Mnangagwa highlighted the continuing relevance of this struggle, urging SADC nations to remain steadfast against any efforts to undermine their sovereignty, particularly the imposition of illegal sanctions and coercive measures.
SADC united against illegal sanctions and sovereignty threats
Mnangagwa declared that the nation needs unified support against all attacks on territorial sovereignty and illicit economic restrictions.
He strongly expressed his backing for the ongoing struggle of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic to achieve self-determination status.
The president emphasized that African unity remains vital for a completely liberated Africa while declaring that “Africa will not be free until Western Sahara gets its liberation.”
In addition to political solidarity, the president expressed his commitment to peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly in its eastern regions.
According to ZBC News, he reiterated the need for dialogue and de-escalation to achieve long-lasting peace.
He declared that “it is time to silence the guns and focus on building constructive dialogue” while highlighting the role of SADC in establishing peace and stability in the DRC.
