In a recent development, the government of Zimbabwe has acknowledged the growing concern over the disappearance of basic goods from supermarkets and retail shops across the country. The issue came under scrutiny during a question-and-answer session in the National Assembly, where Mpopoma-Mzilikazi legislator Charles Moyo, representing the Citizens Coalition for Change, raised pertinent questions about measures to address this challenge and stabilize prices in both local and foreign currencies.
Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, who serves as the Leader of Government Business in Parliament, responded to the inquiries and assured the nation that the government is taking the matter seriously. He conveyed that the relevant ministry would conduct a thorough analysis to determine the extent of goods disappearing from shop shelves and whether there is a direct correlation between these disappearances and budget-related factors.
“This is an extremely specific issue that requires a detailed examination by the relevant ministry. We need to analyze whether goods are indeed vanishing from the shelves and whether any budgetary changes have contributed to this situation,” Minister Ziyambi emphasized during the parliamentary session.
He continued, “While I acknowledge that the concerns raised may be valid, it would be premature for me to provide an answer without concrete evidence linking the disappearance of goods to specific causes. We will await the results of the analysis, and once we have a clearer picture, we will inform the government and take the necessary steps to address the situation.”
The rising prices of basic commodities have been a growing concern for Zimbabwean citizens. According to the latest data from the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency, the minimum amount required for a single person to purchase enough food to meet their basic needs surged to ZWL$155,360.39 in January, compared to ZWL$106,696.52 in December of the previous year. This substantial increase in the cost of living has prompted widespread worry and led to calls for government intervention.
The government’s commitment to investigating the scarcity of basic goods and its impact on prices is a welcomed step towards addressing the concerns of the population.
