In a move seen as strengthening the Zimbabwean judiciary, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) announced the appointment of eleven new High Court judges on Wednesday, June 12th, 2024. This follows a series of public interviews held last month to identify suitable candidates. Justice Garainashe Mawadze was also appointed as the first Deputy Judge President of the High Court.
The newly appointed judges will be formally sworn in at a ceremony scheduled for next Monday at the Constitutional Court in Harare. The list of judges appointed to the High Court includes Naison Chivhayo, Regis Dembure, Mpokisengi Dube, Joel Mambara, Gibson Mandaza, Faith Mushure, Vivian Ndlovu, Ngoni Nduna, Philipa Phillips, and Sijabuliso Siziba.
JSC Recommendations Secure Presidential Approval
The JSC conducted interviews last month for the High Court vacancies, considering applications from 39 candidates. Following a thorough evaluation process, the Commission submitted their recommendations to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who ultimately approved the final selections.
“The Judicial Service Commission forwarded its recommendations for the successful candidates to the President after conducting public interviews attended by 39 prospective judges last month,” a statement from the JSC reads. “A swearing-in ceremony will be held for the Deputy Judge President and the eleven new judges on Monday, June 17th, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the Constitutional Court of Zimbabwe, Mashonganyika Building in Harare.”
The appointment of these new judges is widely viewed as a positive development for the Zimbabwean judiciary. The incoming judges bring a wealth of legal experience to the bench, which is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of the court system.
