The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) will be led by Deputy Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba, who was selected by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. His term will start on January 1, 2025. Commissioner-General Godwin Tandabantu Matanga, who has been in charge of the police force since 2018, is getting ready to retire with this appointment.
Stephen Mutamba appointed Commissioner-General of Zimbabwe Republic Police
Martin Rushwaya, the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, made the announcement in a statement on Friday. His Excellency the President, Cde. Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, has named Deputy Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba as the Commissioner-General of the Zimbabwe Republic Police in accordance with Section 221(1) of the Zimbabwean Constitution. Rushwaya stated that the appointment will take effect on January 1, 2025.
Mutamba’s promotion to the top police position signifies ZRP stability and consistency.
As stated by New Zimbabawe, he has been instrumental in establishing law enforcement tactics and preserving security in Zimbabwe in his capacity as Deputy Commissioner-General. It is anticipated that his leadership will strengthen the groundwork laid by his predecessor.
Matanga’s tenure marked post-Mugabe reforms and police restructuring
After longtime President Robert Mugabe was overthrown in the 2017 political crisis, Matanga was named Commissioner-General in 2018. Augustine Chihuri, the then-Commissioner-General, was also overthrown in the revolution and went into exile. During his tenure, Matanga worked to modernize the police force in the post-Mugabe era and win back public trust in the force.
As Mutamba assumes leadership, he must balance the demands of contemporary policing in a nation with intricate political and social dynamics with the task of maintaining law and order. Given Zimbabwe’s ongoing economic struggles, demands for political reforms, and increased scrutiny of law enforcement, his nomination comes at a crucial moment.
Mnangagwa’s efforts to maintain stability within important state institutions are demonstrated by the appointment of a new Commissioner-General.
Spectators are eager to watch how Mutamba’s leadership will affect the ZRP’s course and contribution to Zimbabwe’s continued progress. The police force is about to embark on a new era under his leadership, and his promotion is a significant turning point in its history.
