Southern African Development Community (SADC) Chairperson and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has formally acknowledged the Mozambique Constitutional Council’s ruling on the October 9 General Election.
The Council’s decision upheld the victory of the ruling FRELIMO party, marking the completion of all legal processes in line with Mozambique’s national laws and SADC election guidelines.
In a statement released Tuesday, Mnangagwa emphasized the importance of respecting the Council’s verdict, calling on all political parties involved in the electoral process to support peace and stability in Mozambique.
Urging regional and global support for mozambique
President Mnangagwa expressed the SADC’s readiness to assist Mozambique’s incoming government and its citizens in strengthening democracy and governance.
According to ZBC News, he urged the international community to respect Mozambique’s sovereignty and support the nation’s efforts to maintain peace and law and order.
“SADC stands ready to assist Mozambique in consolidating electoral democracy,” Mnangagwa stated. He also called on stakeholders to approach post-election developments constructively to ensure lasting stability.
Fostering peace and stability in the region
President Mnangagwa highlighted the significance of respecting the will of the Mozambican people as expressed through the ballot box.
He called for all parties to prioritize peace and cooperation, which are essential for Mozambique’s development and the broader stability of the Southern African region.
The SADC chairperson reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to promoting democratic processes guided by the rule of law and regional unity.
