Toyota, Honda collide; injuries reported

According to Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the National Police Spokesperson, the collision involved a Toyota Hilux GD6 carrying seven passengers and a Honda Fit with two occupants. “Police in Marondera are investigating a serious road traffic accident that took place on December 24, 2024, at the 19-kilometer peg along the Wedza-Sadza Road,” Nyathi said.

The Toyota Hilux reportedly veered off the road after the side-swipe and landed on a bridge. The victims, who sustained varying degrees of injuries, were promptly transported to Sadza Hospital for medical treatment.

The circumstances leading to the crash are under investigation, with police authorities urging motorists to exercise caution, particularly during the holiday season when road traffic tends to increase.

Preliminary findings suggest driver error may have contributed to the incident, but further details will emerge as the investigation progresses.

Increased road safety awareness

The accident highlights the ongoing need for heightened road safety awareness in Zimbabwe, particularly on rural roads where infrastructure challenges and traffic congestion often result in accidents.

Authorities are expected to use this incident as a platform to reiterate the importance of adherence to road traffic regulations, including maintaining safe speeds and avoiding reckless driving practices.

Victims stable, safety efforts intensify

Medical personnel at Sadza Hospital have reported that all seven injured individuals are receiving care, with their conditions described as stable. Efforts to provide psychological support to the victims and their families are also underway.

As the festive season continues, road safety remains a top priority for law enforcement and transport authorities. The Wedza-Sadza road accident serves as a reminder of the critical need for vigilance and compliance with road safety measures to prevent further tragedies.

Law enforcement will maintain a visible presence along major roads, conducting routine checks and promoting safety awareness to minimize risks during this busy travel period.
