Zimbabwe’s leader mourns Namibia’s founding president, hailing his legacy

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has extended his condolences to Namibia following the death of Dr. Sam Nujoma, the country’s founding president and a champion of African liberation.

In a statement, Mnangagwa described Nujoma as a towering figure in Africa’s fight for independence, whose contributions will continue to inspire generations.

The Zimbabwean president emphasized Nujoma’s unwavering support for Zimbabwe during its post-colonial struggles, especially during the Land Reform Programme.

According to ZBC News, he noted that Namibia’s first president viewed Zimbabwe’s fight as his own, strengthening regional ties and promoting Pan-African values.

Mnangagwa’s message came after Namibian President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba formally announced Nujoma’s passing on February 9, 2025.

The late leader died at age 95 in Windhoek, having played a pivotal role in Namibia’s independence and guiding the nation from 1990 to 2005.

African leaders pay their respects

The loss of Sam Nujoma has reverberated across the African continent, with several heads of state and international figures expressing their grief.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called Nujoma a key figure in Southern Africa’s liberation, saying his leadership and sacrifice helped shape the region’s history.

African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat also honored Nujoma, calling him an epitome of courage who remained steadfast in his vision for a free and united Africa.

Kenyan President William Ruto described him as a selfless and visionary leader, while Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan highlighted his contributions to Pan-Africanism and his fight for justice and equality.

Nujoma’s dedication to Africa’s liberation struggle left a lasting impact, and his legacy continues to inspire leaders across the continent.

A legacy of liberation and leadership

Sam Nujoma directed Namibia’s independence movement that fought to free Namibia from South African governance.

Nujoma’s leadership resulted in Namibia achieving full independence on March 21, 1990 that transformed the region forever.

To lead Namibia was not the only role for Nujoma, as he actively championed African unity by fighting for greater independence across the entire continent.

Throughout his tenure in power, he utilized his leadership abilities to support both economic growth as well as regional collaboration.

There will be official events to honor Namibia’s founding father in the upcoming days while the world mourns his passing.

His undeniable role in Namibian, Southern African freedom and African continental liberation will always persist.
