Lake Kariba Tragedy: Four Drown, Including Two Soldiers

In a tragic turn of events at Lake Kariba, two soldiers from the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) and two civilians lost their lives when their boat capsized. The devastating incident unfolded near Tsetse Island, Kariba, at approximately 12:30 PM on 16th September 2023.

The victims, now identified as Sergeant Tatenda Nekati (36) and Corporal Nxobile Ncube from ZNA, along with Trust Phiri (24) from Chilimba Village, Negande, and Adson Mupiringano (40) of Batonga, were sadly not able to survive the ordeal.

Authorities were swift in their response, with the bodies of the deceased being retrieved on 17th and 18th September 2023. They were subsequently taken to the Kariba District mortuary, where post-mortem examinations are to be conducted.

ZRP spokesman, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, expressed his sorrow regarding the incident. He used the unfortunate event as a reminder, urging the general public to prioritize safety, especially when making use of smaller boats like dinghies.

Lake Kariba, known for its serene beauty, became the backdrop for this unfortunate event, causing ripples of grief across the nation. The incident also sparked conversations about the necessary precautions when navigating such vast water bodies.

Incidents of this nature underscore the need for continued awareness campaigns, infrastructure investments, and enhanced safety protocols. While the circumstances surrounding this tragedy are still under investigation, the reminder of nature’s unpredictability is evident.
